Why does my Windows Movie Maker freeze in Vista?

I have WMM (I think its version 1) that came with Vista and it kept freezing. I then downloaded WMM version 2.6 for Vista, and when Im in the editing screen, it shows a green screen of the thumbnails of the videos. Normally it shows the beginning of each clip. How do I fix this?
